Signs Of Life...

Well here we are three weeks into the season. Snow, snow and more snow, not to mention the cold. For some reason we have been a little stale as a team. We left for the semester break in December a pretty hungry bunch that was working hard and giving effort in every task including the conditioning. However, we returned struggling to get any traction on the tennis court. Perahps the Grinch stole our hunger.

Now, I don't mean to be so harsh as there has been some good and being that I have actually played quite a few days, I have not had my eyes on all courts, but as whole, we are better than we have showed. Who knows, maybe I could just be a grumpy coach due to a long and getting longer winter season.

Unfortunately, I am a fair amount ill and the right arm is struggling to hold up to the daily grind of tennis play. As a result, I was on the sidelines yesterday and guess what...yesterday, we showed signs of life. The conditioning session was better, the play was better, effort was better, and I am happier. Of course, I did have to break some chops and make sure we are all working for the same thing and still have the common goals for the semester. Still, it was nice to see the team playing closer to potential.

I hope to ease my way out of bed today and make it to practice. I am excited to see if the trend will continue. Traditionally, the team improves quite a bit in this "preseason" stretch as we await our first match 2/11/11 vs. STAC. I hope that we are now on the right track and have found our way. With years of this under my belt now, I know where we need to be and what it is going to take to be our best when the time comes to compete for championships. I hope that the team is begining to understand the same.

Moving forward together for the greater good of this team.

Macho Man

A long, long time ago, members of the men's tennis team at Concordia College were quite involved on campus. The following is an excerpt from a college "lip-sync" which was a popular phenomenon back in the 1980s.

Perhaps you will recognize some of the participants...

Spring 2011 Schedule...

Well it's just around the corner. It's hard to believe but our first spring match is fast approaching. Your Clippers will open up at home Friday, 2/11/11 vs. the much improved Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas College @ 2:15pm.

In addition, the Clippers will have a function the following day, Saturday, 2/12/11 @ 11am, as we welcome Craig O'Shannessy and the Brain Game to Bronxville for his tennis strategy presentation.

Highlighting the slate are trips to Florida, Las Vegas and South Carolina so as to compete against the nation's finest competition. Clearly, this will be the most difficult schedule in the history of the program and one that will very much help the team prepare for a late spring run at the NCAA II National Championship.

For a look at the full schedule as it stands click here.

We look forward to your support and seeing you out at the matches.

Selfish...

Does a college tennis player have have to be selfish to be successful?

Is saying "thank you" obsolete?

Are honesty and integrity important?

Boldarev Wins USTA Indoor...

Keeping busy over the semester break, Andrey Boldarev captured the USTA National Indoor Championship singles title held at the USTA National Tennis Center 12/26 - 12/31 2010.

This was certainly no easy task as the draw (click here for drawsheet) was a rather large 256 and Andrey had to play 8 matches in just a few days to gain the championship. Along the way, Andrey defeated many current and former top ranked college players including the current #1 players from St. John's University, Cornell University and finally Will Boe-Wiegaard, the former #1 ranked player in NCAA III and regular success on the futures tour.

With any luck, Andrey will bring this confidence to the spring season and compete for a top ranking in NCAA II. This is just the kind of move we needed Andrey to make to realize his potential as a player. With continued hard work, dedication to conditioning and improved decision making Andrey has the ability to lead the team to special things in the months to come.

Inspiration...

A current player sent an email to the entire team with this poem attached. He notes that he was inspired by the lines. I thank Mr. Kauffman for this as he has helped me to do something that I have had trouble doing...

You are the Man who used to boast
that you'd achieve the uttermost,
some day.

You merely wished to show,
to demonstrate how much you know
and prove the distance you can go...

Another year we've just passed through.
What new ideas came to you?
How many big things did you do?

Time left twelve fresh months in your care
how many of them did you share
with opportunity and dare
again where you so often missed?

We do not find you on the list of makers good.
explain the fact!
Ah No, T'was not the chance you lacked!
As usual - you failed to act!

- Herbert Kauffman

As coach Tarangioli always says "never miss an opportunity". I look forward to acting in the spring semester.
